#archimodel2021

Theme: Physical Model

WINNERS ANNOUNCED

Brief

The history of scaled physical models is as old as the practice of architecture itself. Initially invented as a tool for experiments and communication, it has yet to find a contender for its role; perhaps VR can change that. Materials for physical models have evolved over the years, however, and have nearly defined certain practices: Antonio Gaudi with rope and sand bags, Frei Otto with fabric models, and Rem Koolhaas with blue foams.

For this quarter’s challenge, we want to see your physical or digital model! Model-making is a very important and tangible step of the design process. It helps you better process and understand your designs, giving them a sense of scale and mass.

Winners

We enjoyed the clarity and boldness of the concept. Not only is the design striking, the main concept of stark contrast between the old and new was beautifully delineated through the use of material and design.

The jury looked favorably upon the experimental nature of this project. Scaled model can be a great vehicle to study and simulate structural design. The use of inverted tensile forces in both design and model making processes were highly commendable.

We chose this project for its creative application of the material. Making a thick plexiglass flexible through strategic laser incision is executed brilliantly and beautifully.

This entry put a new spin on this monthly challenge we didn’t expect. The project cleverly links two major forms of consumption – sustenance and construction – and illuminates critical questions around sustainability. The end result is provocative, playful, and potentially delicious.
